We had the best experience this past week. All the horses were beautifully cared for and all the equipment was in great condition. Our guide Bailey was so enjoyable and friendly. Perfect weather made it a perfect ride. I highly recommend this adventure.

While I have reservations about sharing negative reviews publicly, our experience was so intense and, frankly traumatizing, that I think it’s important for other families with small children to understand the inherent risks. We are a family of four—two adults and two children (12 and 8).  

As native Floridians, we understand Florida weather. We had booked a beach horse riding session a few weeks before a planned vacation. Like any day in Florida in the summer, we knew rain was a possibility but took solace that our expensive excursion was protected because the policy was that any inclement weather would result in cancellation and full refund. On the day of our excursion, we monitored weather closely. We even established a text channel with the company about 2 hours before the ride, where we expressed concern about the weather and noted we were watching it. We arrived at our designated time, fully expecting to have the excursion cancelled. We expressed that we would happily move to another time, day, or be refunded and choose to spend that money on another excursion at our final destination lower in South Florida. Our start time was delayed twice because of the weather. We trusted our guide and moved forward. We eventually began after our scheduled start time.

Fernandina Beach had a few storm watches in effect and there were remnants of a bigger storm system that had moved through a few days prior. We began our journey with our friendly guide (who truly was great—very kind and informative about the horses and their routines). We were moving in the direction the storm was moving (as the storm moved south, so did we). A few times, my wife asked if we should turn around, as we were nervous about getting caught in a major storm. The guide determined to keep going. Again, we trusted the guide. She did note, however, that if it began to rain, we’d need to “hurry back because we are covered in metal.” 
 
When we reached the mile marker on the beach to turn around, we encountered dark and ominous skies. The trek back is a good 25 minutes. Within 5 minutes, it started to rain. Within another 5, thunder and lightening set in. By 12-15 minutes in, we were exposed to life-threatening lightening and storm conditions.

For at least 10 minutes, we—a family of four with two children and no prior experience—were surrounded by lightening. The rain was fine—it rains. But the thunder and lightening were so severe that it caused the horses to spook and to begin trotting faster than the normal rate. This—coupled with the storm--elicited screams from our youngest (we were chided to not scream as it spooks the horses; a fair point—but when lightening is within several yards, it’s hard not to be alarmed). The storm was so bad that sirens were going off in the area. Several times, we asked if we could take an earlier “exit” off the dunes to catch the parking lot and move away from the water. This was not allowed. About 5 minutes before the journey end, the storm conditions were so bad, when lightning struck beside us, the guide screamed in an alarmed way to “get off the horses now” and we had to try to walk back in an absolutely unsafe storm. My kids were left trying to jump off their horses and run to shelter in the middle of the beach in a storm while my wife, the guide, and I gathered and walked the horses back.  The parking lot was covered with water (I’m 6’4” and it was up to my shins). Two teenagers actually had to help our 8 year old seek shelter due to the conditions. My phone became so waterlogged that it was permanently damaged. Again—this was not a light Florida afternoon rainstorm. This was a significant and unsafe weather event. 

I know the company is not God and cannot predict weather. I have no desire to penalize the guide because, quite frankly, she was lovely and kind and wonderful during the part of the trek that was safe and during the scary part. However, I am so incredibly disappointed that our lives were put in danger for profit—particularly as we felt like WE had advocated (multiple times) for ourselves due to the weather conditions. My youngest was traumatized. I don’t say that lightly. We lived in Kansas before Florida and then in Florida on the Gulf Coast. We have been in major weather events—hurricanes, blizzards, and tornadoes. We’re not sensitive but we do respect mother nature. We suggested to take a rain check or a refund but this was not honored. As I reflect back, it’s hard not to see that the company chose to prioritize a profit over the lives of its customers. If you look back at the radar from Friday, you’ll see---this was a significant weather event and it had the opportunity to be quite tragic.

To be clear, these excursions are not expensive. We picked this excursion for our vacation over a day at Disney, as we’ve tried to prioritize memories and meaningful moments in our family. 

I reached out to the business owners. Robin responded once asking what I’d like to “do” about this. I responded and it went un-answered. I also reached out again. The company has chosen to ignore. 

The company got their money, and we got less than an hour ride in absolutely unsafe conditions—for us and the horses. I truly believe that on a good weather day, the ride would have been fantastic. This one was memorable, but in all of the wrong ways. I want to reiterate that, bad judgement aside, the guide was fantastic. But I would implore the company to not put people’s lives in danger for profit. And we’d implore families, especially, to be mindful before taking children on this excursion, particularly if there is a chance of less than ideal weather.

If you love horses, the beach, and sunsets, then you just might want to giddy-up down to Peters Point and take a ride that ropes in all three.  

This was our second time riding ride with AIHR, and we enjoyed it as much as the first.  Our Guide was Zuzu both times and she was just great.  The horses know exactly where they are going and what to do.  It truly is a "ride" and not a "drive".  Just relax and enjoy the view, the clip-clop of the hooves, the ocean waves, and like me, wish it would go on forever.  ZuZu takes great photos at the stopping point and checks in with you on how you're feeling.  Whether you are a seasoned rider or beginner,  it's an experience you'll happily remember forever.  Thanks so much.  We'll be back next year!



Had the best time! It was my first time horseback riding but I will be doing it again!

Excellent experience!  From signing up to confirmation and arrival, everything was easy!  Amy was a great guide and we will be back!

Very disappointed with this ride. Horses were not well behaved, guides horse threw our guide and spooked my daughters horse so then she got thrown off. Robin was amazing to book with very kind and professional but no follow up after ride.

Horses did not easily obey riders and it took a lot of effort to keep them where they needed to be at the pace we needed them to go. Also there were loose dogs in the beach that seemed to unnerve the horses as well. For a ride like this I would have expected very well trained horses and a guide horse with no questionable behavior - very poor decision making on behalf of who decided the horses to send. These were our horses - Cutter did the best with my 10 year old, Indie did okay with our 17, Chanel was temperamental and very difficult to handle, Tanner was constantly trying to go where the guide had asked us not to and was definitely not comfortable until almost back to the lot and was very skittish with the dogs. Sebastian was the guide horse and definitely not well behaved or well trained. Our daughters horse was Zirc very slow and dependable except when trying to get away from Sebastian. Very disappointed. This was a bucket list dream come true ride for us as our family Christmas gift and we are so disappointed. We did our homework read reviews talked with Robin no indication and nothing could have prepared us for this bad horseback riding experience.

Another year and another fantastic morning with the Amelia Island's Premier Horseback Riding Tour. 
Hard to believe that in 2022 we made a 5 hour round trip from St Augustine to experience the Horseback Tour, this year we took it one step further and stayed on Amelia for several nights.
Once again Kate was the guide for my ride, Kate is amazing at everything she does, passionate, dedicated, caring and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for her. It is obvious Kate, and the rest of the team are enthusiastic about what they do and truly take care of their horses.
I am already looking forward to a return visit in 2024.


This was an amazing experience for my kids, 19 and 20 yoa. We were accompanied by a fabulous host named Kate. She was spectacular! She not only had a great demeanor but asked us about ourselves and told us about all thing Amelia. We plan to come back and ride horses on the beach again. Thank you so much Kate for making this a more than wonderful experience for my kids and I!

Absolute blast! 3 girls and I went for a bachelorette outing and it was the best opening to our morning/weekend! Myla was a great guide! She took great pictures of us all strolling down the beach! 10/10 would recommend!! 

ZuZu was amazing and very professional. We could tell she loves her job and the horses. It was my first time riding and Chanel and Tanner took care of myself and Sylvia. We were connected with our horses and we felt very safe. This experience was definitely a five star horseback riding tour. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone. 

Husband and wife here and neither have ridden since we were kids. We had a wonderful time with Amelia Island Horseback Riding (AIHR). Special thanks to our guide, Kate! What a fantastic experience, my wife, daughter and I booked the beach horse riding with Amelia Island Horseback Riding. I was the only family member with any horse-riding experience, and that was from over 40 years ago, that did not matter; the horses were so well trained. Our guide explained everything, making sure everyone was comfortable and confident before we started, even though we are from the United Kingdom, we are already looking forward to hopefully re-visiting again in 2023. Britney was an amazing guide! One of us had never ridden a horse, 2 of us had ridden a few times and one of us had ridden many times. She was able to fit us with the right horse for each of our levels of experience. Britney knew exactly what she was doing, was an experienced rider, informed us of all
the rules and I felt very confident that she was extremely capable of handling anything that could go wrong. Our sunset ride was an amazing experience that we will never forget. Great experience from start to finish. Happy with the price and the customer service. Kate used our phones to take photos from different angles to make sure we got a great pic which was awesome.  I also spoke to the owner Robin on the phone when booking and she was also great. Highly recommend.

My granddaughter and I took the sunset ride with Britney as our guide. She helped us get some great pics. Highly recommend. 

My husband and I went on a morning ride with Brittany. It was a beautiful day and Brittany was very knowledgeable.  We got to splash around in the water a bit but could not canter on the beach because of the Island rules, not those of Amelia Island Horseback Riding. The best part was the beautiful pictures that Brittany took of us and sent immediately. They will help us to remember this bucket list adventure for the rest of our lives. Would not recommend. Guide hollered the whole time. I thought it was supposed to be leisurely. Paid too much not to have fun.

Having owned and ridden horses for most of my life,  I sometimes hesitate to book a trail ride when I'm out of town.   I am so happy I did this time or I would have missed out on one of my best rides ever!     From booking online till the end of the ride, my experience was the absolute best.    My trail guide Brittaney was excellent!    She gave excellent guidance and briefing for the inexperienced riders in the group and at the same time, gave me plenty of room and space to experience a great ride on the beach.   The horses are obviously wonderfully cared for and gentle.   I could have not asked for a better experience.    Thank  you Brittaney and A.I. Horseback Riding :)   


My wife and I did the sunrise rise. She has ridden before I have not. To be honest I was quite scared. Holly, our guide did an incredible job explaining everything to me and calming me. She rode with me in the beginning to ensure I was comfortable. Couldn't have asked for a better guide or sunrise.

My husband and I booked a horseback reservation, and the experience from start to finish was a joy.  Booking was easily accomplished online, and we were asked questions at the time of booking about our riding experience level, etc.  The day of our reservation, we were contacted to confirm our reservation.  When we arrived, our guide asked again about our riding experience and provided such thoughtful and thorough instruction to ensure we'd be at ease and knowledgeable about what to do during our ride.  I am a fairly experienced rider, and still learned something new!  Our guide was friendly and attentive throughout our ride, and took pictures for us.  The horses were beautiful and gentle, and riding on the beach was almost a meditative experience.  I highly recommend, and look forward to doing it again the next time we visit Amelia Island.

This was an amazing experience. The horses were fantastic and the scenery gorgeous. The staff was wonderful to work with as well. There were various levels of riding experience in our group, and the staff made sure to take the time to work with everyone to make them comfortable and ensure a great experience. I looked at several companies and chose this one because I didn’t want to wear a helmet 😂
I drove one hour and twenty minutes from St Simons. First day we rode onto the beach and it started thundering and lightning so we returned. Offered a refund or reschedule.
Brittany our leader and gives very good instructions on how to ride. Very easy even for Simone who has never been on a horse.  Safety is first so I rescheduled and Holly was our leader. Another awesome leader. They go over and beyond to give you a special ride. 
If you are a rider… this is for you! You can bring your cell phone with you ( one place said no picture and sell you a photo package 😩) this group takes your pictures for you with your camera. Lots of pictures!!

We had a wonderful time on our horseback ride on the beach. We had a large party and participated over multiple days - one of us did the sunrise ride - which was beautiful and fun, and the other two groups did morning rides. The horses were great and the guides (Kate and Brittany) were wonderful, too. We could not have asked for a more special activity. Highly recommend this.

Oh my goodness!  This was definitely on my bucket list! I have always dreamed of riding a horse on the beach. Being able to do it at sunrise was icing on the cake! Our guide was very friendly and helpful for those that were not as comfortable on a horse. She took lots of pictures of us which were immediately sent to us at the end. I loved that we didn't have to just walk in a line with our horses one behind the other  We had some freedom to move around if we wanted and were even allowed to go a little faster at times if we were comfortable with it. Being from Wyoming and have rode all my life, I was missing my horse while I was in Florida.  I decided to book a sunset ride and little did I expect such a wonderful ride. Debbie was an outstanding guide! Her skills with children who have never ridden before were excellent! She took our kids from being very nervous to feeling extremely comfortable with horseback riding. All of the horses were calm and gentle. It was so fun - but we were a little disappointed that we were only able to walk. Last time we rode with this company we were able to trot and canter at our leisure but that didn’t seem to be an option this time. The horses were in great condition and well matched with each rider.

This was one on my bucket list that I will not forget.  Riding a horse along the beach was a dream come true.  Just like in a movie.  There three strangers who had never met before became best buddies through the experience. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I plan to repeat in the near future.

Wonderful experience!!!! My 12 year old daughter and I went riding for her birthday and it was great!! The horses were very friendly, they knew exactly what to do and where to go, they led us LOL! Our guide, Holly, was wonderful as well. She made us feel very safe and comfortable. We drove 1 hour each way to do this and we can't wait to go back and ride again. It is definitely a MUST DO!!

Wonderful experience! I booked it as a birthday surprise to do something new for my husband and when we arrived I realized I was scared, scared to even touch the horse much less ride one! The ladies were EXTREMELY supportive and reassuring, I left a professional! Zurc was a blue eyed, giraffe coat beauty and was a well behaved sweetheart. The ride on the beach was so serene and I’m happy I chose this company. 10 stars!

This was on my bucket list.  If I never knew how heaven was,  I  experienced it today! The sun setting,  waves crashing! What a beautiful experience! Debbie was my guide and was amazing.  I rode the handsome paint "Pete". If you need a once in a lifetime experience.  This is it!

We signed up for the sunrise ride - and am I glad we did! The temp was mild and the sunrise was glorious! Just us 3 (and Pam) and as the horses were eager and fresh we gave some free rein. This was a great way for family adventuring! Everything from the reservation to the end of the ride was made easy and communication was fantastic. Our guide was excellent at keeping the ride exciting for the competitive riders in our group, yet calm and easy for the non-riders in our group! She also cleaned up after each horse! (another company isn't as compliant on that)  THIS is the company you want to work with if you want to beach ride!! Second to NONE!! We will be back again!

We loved our experience with Amelia Island Horseback Riding.  We booked online really easily and communication was easy about details in terms of arrival etc.  We were a group of 4 and we had two guides (one was in training).  All of our horses were amazing!  It was a greta experience having the horse walk through the shallow ocean's edge and on the beach.

This company is very professional and is very conscious about level of riders within the group.  As an experienced rider with beginner riders with us, the guide was very good at making sure everyone was safe, but those that were advanced were able to have fun.

We had such a great time! Debbie is great. It was perfect. The beach ride was beautiful, horses are very well trained. You can tell, they spend a lot of time with their horses. We did a afternoon ride and the weather was beautiful.

Had a blast staff was great worked with me due to weather issues so I still got to ride on my vacation, did sunrise ride it was worth getting up for , the horses are all gaited or walkers which is the best ride ever

I have always wanted to ride a horse on the beach. I am so happy to say that the experience that Debbie offered was above and beyond my expectations. Thank you for a great time.

Myla took my daughter (6yo) and I on an amazing morning ride along the seashore.  My daughter was very scared and Myla ponied her the entire time.  Toward the end Myla had taught my daughter how to control her horse and really built up her confidence!  I was able to trot a bit and take my horse into the water, which he loved!  Their horses are gorgeous and look/act so healthy and well taken care of. We look forward to our next ride!

Debbie and Deby were AMAZING!!! This was truly a special experience and they made it very easy and delightful from booking  until we left. The horses are so sweet and you can tell they hand-picked the right ones based on our level of experience. Having known horses, I can also tell they're well taken care-of and loved! Deby was a great guide and made us very comfortable. We also thought we were going to have to cancel last minute due to a hurricane (but luckily we didn't) and they were beyond kind and understanding about our situation. HIGHLY recommended in all ways!
